Gayle Anderson reported UC Tested Utility Ground cover, Kurapia as a new plant product that can us water and water bill on her program, Drought Watch on Los Angeles KTLA Morning News. Mr. Edward L. Wallace, a landscape contractor of Midwest Landscaping in Long Beach, California was interviewed and assisting the program professionally. We’re researching other turf alternatives, too, like Kurapia (Phyla nodiflora), from Japan. Kurapia has strong creeping ability but stays just 1 to 3 inches in height. Once established, it needs 60% less water than traditional turf. In California, Phyla has long been considered to be an invasive weed, but this new strain from Japan is sterile and has have no viable seeds. We’re the first to grow it in sod form.

a new low-water groundcover developed in Japan. It was developed for drought conditions and is tolerant of different soils and a range of temperatures. It grows quickly to establish ground cover but is sterile, so unwanted seeding does not occur.

One of the plants used in the Truscott landscape that is currently being tested is Kurapia (Lippa nodiflora Campagna Verde), a ground cover developed in Japan for use in drought conditions. Research done at UC Riverside found Kurapia to be one of three top-performing ground covers out of 19 chosen for a study on water efficiency, written by Anne Schellman via The Enterprise on June 10, 2014.
