Our second installation of Kurapia sod at a famous fast food burger chain in Torrance, CA!

The existing turf was replaced with drought tolerant Kurapia in order to help conserve water.

UC Riverside Field Day

At the UC Riverside Field Day held on Sept. 15, 2016, Dr. Jim Baird, UC ANR CE Associate Specialist, Dept. of Botany and Plant Sciences, UC Riverside, introduced Kurapia groundcover as a turf alternative and good option for severe drought conditions. Dr. Baird explained Kurapia’s characteristics, tolerance for drought due to its extensive root system, as well as options for weed management. Kurpia is a broadleaf and known as safe to grass herbicides. UC Riverside conducted a study on Kurapia’s tolerance to commonly used broadleaf herbicides, which can be viewed in detail in the Herbicide Tolerance Guidelines report. We will post updates later on Kurapia’s recovery from herbicide damage.

The only time I watered the Kurapia was the initial week of planting.

After the planting, I was worried a couple times last summer that the heat and dryness would kill the plants. I attempted to fix my sprinkler system and give the plants a drink, but the location gets significant foot traffic from kids and the cars parking along the street. Hence I was not able to water them due to broken sprinklers. And to my surprise the Kurapia continued to thrive through the summer, fall, and winter.
